Department Of English

Since its inception, the department of English has been extending greater contribution to the college in the area of English Language Learning initiatives on par with the latest teaching methodologies and other student-centered learning activities. A good number of teachers are Doctorate holders actively involved in guiding researchers in the field of Literature and Language. Some of the teachers made presentations at International Conventions and other State Level Seminars. Teacher-student participation in various Seminars, Workshops and other Training Programmes has been noteworthy. The Commissionerate of Collegiate Education in collaboration with the US State Department started a 12-day training programme for all the English Lecturers under ELF*-Training Programme. The Department of English went further and conducted several workshops on CLT techniques. The members of the faculty of the English Department have been resource persons in conducting workshops at several places.

Activities 2016-17

1. Department of English had conducted an extension lecture on “Power of Focus for Students” on 1st of September 2016. Resource person K.Vivek Chandra (English Fluency Trainer, Self Management & Motivational Speaker) motivated the students to develop their personality and enlightened them about the power of Focus. He also brought in awareness among the students for the need of communication skills and personality development

 

2. Department of English has organised various competitions in Essay Writing, Elocution, Skits and one minute talks during the academic year 2016-17, to tap the potentials of the students and improve their writing and speaking skills.

3. One-Day Workshop was arranged by the Department of English on “Tips for Job Interviews, Resume writing Communication Skills and Interpersonal Skills” in Collaboration with Deloitte (multi- national company) 25 trainers from the company have attended the workshop and trained the students in writing and speaking skills. The trainer exposed the students to the needs and wants of the companies from candidates and gave them tips to acquire the skills and update themselves to face the challenges of corporate world as well as Government sector.

4. Department of English assigned a project on Errors-Terrors to the a few advanced learners to identify their fears and stumbling blocks with regard to English Grammar. These students referred to some competitive books and prepared flash cards and interacted with students and identified a few areas in which errors are frequent and complied a book, which is not only helpful to students to learn to speak English and but also crack competitive exams. The project was selected at district level and the students showcased the importance of the study project at the state level competition and were also appreciated for their presentation skills and good work.

5. Dept. of English is conducted three day workshop. Stress one of the components of soft skills is a burning issue in today’s scenario. In order to deal with stress the department in collaboration with Hurtfulness society conducted there day workshop wherein the students learnt the techniques to handle  stress.

6. English is fun: This is a workshop conducted by the department focussing on puns, riddles, puzzles, etc., to demonstrate that learning English is fun and not a tedious exercise. Different stalls were put up by the students dealing with some aspects of English.
